Adams had outlined his intentions to attack and try to take advantage of any lack of confidence there may be amongst a Sheffield United sitting at the foot of the table.

The opening minutes of the game were a bit stop-start, with the referee’s whistle, rightly or wrongly, interrupting play.

Lyle Taylor drilled a low free kick just inches wide of Chris Neal’s right upright early in the second half following Chris Robertson’s foul on Marlon King just outside the box.

The home side may have had the advantage in terms of numbers, but Vale kept plugging away, searching for a second goal, not content with a single point.

Vale’s ten men continued to battle, limiting the home side to long distance shots and hitting their hosts at the other end whenever the opportunity presented itself.
