Vale made three changes to the starting eleven with the return of skipper Doug Loft who slipped into the midfield spot vacated by the injured Louis Dodds (ankle).

One of the other two changes were enforced, with Calvin Andrew coming in for the injured Lee Hughes (hamstring) whil John McCombe dropped to the bench with Darren Purse returning in central defence.

Vale looked just a little edgy in the opening couple of minutes but managed to control things deep inside their own half.

Vale were struggling to make their mark in the Chesterfield half of the pitch, with move after move breaking down inside the final third.

Vale made a tactical change ten minutes before half time with Chris Birchall coming off the bench and Rob Taylor was the man who made way for the Trinidad international.

The move seemed to put a bit of a spark into Vale’s play and prevent the home side from attacking quite so much.

Vale had penalty appeals waved away when Jennison Myrie-Williams went to ground inside the box early on in the second half, but in truth it would have been a bit harsh on the home side had the penalty been given.

Vale were putting the home side under pressure early on in the second half and a goal from the visitors was looking inevitable.

Calvin Andrew was a little unfortunate not to level the scores when he latched on to a flick on from Tom Pope, but his attempted lob took the slightest of deflections to take the ball over the crossbar and Vale had to settle for a corner.

Stretching to get his toe to the ball, Doug Loft touched the ball over the bar and on top of the net after Williamson had knocked down a right wing cross from Adam Yates.
